IELTS (pronounced as 'eye-elts') stands for International English Language Testing System. It is an exam that tests your English language skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
The IELTS test has four sections (modules): Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The Listening, Reading, and Writing tests are done in one sitting. The Speaking test may be on the same day or up to a week before or after. All modules in IELTS are scored on a band scale from 1-9. Check our IELTS Band score calculator here:
IELTS exam dates are available throughout the year. The test is typically offered two to three times a month. You can check the available dates and register for the test through the official IELTS website - www.ielts.idp.com - or your local test center.
The IELTS exam fee varies by country. In India, the IELTS exam fee is around INR 17,000 as of 2024. It's best to check the current fee on the official IELTS website or with your local test center.
Whether to take IELTS coaching or self-prepare depends on your English proficiency and study habits. Coaching can provide a discplined environment and feedback. Self-study can be effective if you have self-discipline and good resources. Note that IELTS has no syllabus. It is all about improving your language skills through reuglar practice and feedback.
The IELTS test score is valid for 2 years from the date of the test. After 2 years, the score is no longer reported by the IELTS organization. Most universities and immigration authorities accept IELTS scores only within the 2-year validity period.
